Wood Witch Ethics of Wood Work
Cruelty Free- My journey as a wood worker is constantly evolving. In my everyday life I don’t consume anything that contains animal products and do my best to avoid goods that have been tested on animals. It may not seem like this is much of an issue when it comes to wood working. I have come to understand that tannins, hair, beeswax, and animal fat are common ingredients in some adhesives, finishes, polishes, brushes, and stains. It’s still a challenge to find exact ingredients for many items in the hardware store, but I promise I to do everything I can to minimize the harm and exploitation of creatures during the creation of these things that bring me so much peace and joy.
Packaging and the Planet
Shipping or delivering the end product to you is a necessity. I work toward minimizing the environmental impact of my shipping and packaging choices. First, I choose cardboard over bubble mailers, even for some of my smaller items. Cardboard is one the most common and more easily recycled products. It’s also easy to repurpose or reuse. Next, I want your product to arrive in pristine condition, so some bubble wrap or paper is going to be necessary to endure the abuse of the journey from my shop to your home. In my effort to reduce the amount of waste I produce, nearly 100% of my packaging, bubble wrap, or paper goods is recovered and repurposed from a local manufacturing facility. This keeps them from throwing it in the dumpster and helps reduce my costs.
It’s so shiny- care instructions
This includes tarot card holders, oil shelves, and most products where I have burned a design into them. First I sand them like my life depends on it. I progress up to a ridiculously fine grit, then apply multiple coats of polyurethane with a light sanding in between. I prefer a gloss finish, plus this allows for easy maintenance. Regular dusting products will perform just fine, or a lightly damp cloth will keep your product looking great for years to come. They are not water “proof” but an occasional spill shouldn’t be too much to fret over. Also, most woods discolor some over time, especially in sunlight. I rarely add stains unless it’s a custom order as I want the natural grain and color of the wood to strut its stuff all on its own.
The Nitty Gritty on how I finish my turned products
Pens, key chains, pipes, bottle stoppers, etc. are all finished in the same manner- I sand and smooth the surface obsessively until it feels like glass. I employ a durable, maintenance free, and nearly waterproof finish using a coating technique with cyanoacrylate (CA) - you know of this as “super glue.” Oils on our hands will eventually discolor wood products. I strongly discourage buyers from purchasing products with any other finish as it will likely not hold up. This finish helps preserve its beauty and allow the product to stand the test of time. Many turners are reluctant to use this as it is very difficult to execute without flaws, can be more costly than other finishes, and is much more time consuming. These of course affect profits. It is worth it to have a piece last a generation.
Returns Refunds Exchanges
Bottom line, this is more than a side hustle for me, it is something I take joy in doing- and sharing that joy brings me peace and fulfillment. I am a flawed human. I make mistakes. Sometimes things don’t go as planned. If for any reason you are unhappy, dissatisfied, annoyed, perturbed, irritated, disenchanted, or down right pissed off, I will gladly remedy the situation. I appreciate your patience and generosity as I perfect all aspects of my craft and navigate the pains of a fledgling small business.
